When I came to South Africa in 1976, there was a well established folk music scene. There were clubs in Johannesburg, Edenvale, Boksburg, and especially the folk nights in the association of commune houses around Johannesburg. My particular haunt (on Mondays at least) was the cellar of Mangles student restaurant in Braamfontein, opposite Wits University. The club was run by the regular singers, among whom were my friends, Joe and Leyna Sheridan. They decided that there was enough interest in folk to start a little monthly magazine, telling what's on and with interest stuff about folk music in general. I provided a cartoon for each issue, with the heading "Trad Folk Is...", and featuring an anonymous folkist with a beard and long hair, and dressed in tee-shirt and (flared) jeans. (It's not REALLY autobiographical - I wear glasses!). I kept some of the cartoon originals, and I'd like to share them with you. So, I bring you Folk News:
